Hollywood Bowl to debut upgraded sound system this summer

When audiences converge at the Hollywood Bowl this summer, they may notice an improvement in the sound quality emerging from speakers positioned around the outdoor venue. The Los Angeles Philharmonic is debuting an upgraded sound system this summer that is intended to improve the audience experience during concerts.

Officials with the orchestra said it is implementing the L-Acoustics K1 sound system for the new season. The previous loudspeaker system was the V-DOSC loudspeaker array, also from L-Acoustics. The system had been in place at the Bowl since the new shell opened in 2004, according to the L.A. Philharmonic.

The orchestra said the Bowl is the only concert venue in North America to feature K1 as a house system.

As previously reported, the Bowl will also debut improved large screens this season. The new LED screens will replace the existing four screens at the Bowl. Officials expect the new screens to provide better image quality and minimize glare from the sun.

Funding for the improved sound system comes from the L.A. Philharmonic, while the new screens are funded by money from the county as approved by Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

The season is scheduled to officially begin June 22 with a concert with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, and appearances by Bowl Hall of Fame inductees Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, as well as Patti Austin and John Legend.
