Larry David will make his Broadway debut with ‘Fish in the Dark’

Most novice playwrights can only dream of debuting their first works on Broadway. But if your name is Larry David -- the actor-writer behind “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Seinfeld” -- chances are good that New York producers will line up at your door, checks in hand.

David will make his Broadway debut as a playwright and actor in “Fish in the Dark,” a new work that is scheduled to open March 5 in New York. Scott Rudin is producing the play, which will be directed by Tony Award winner Anna D. Shapiro.

The New York Times reported the story on Thursday, and a spokesman for the play independently confirmed the details by phone.

“Fish,” which is David’s first stage play, tells the story of a death in the family and the characters who come together in the aftermath. David told the New York Times on Thursday that he will play “somebody very similar to Larry David -- it might even be Larry David with a different name.”

The production hasn’t set a theater yet and no other casting has been announced.

David was the co-creator of NBC’s “Seinfeld,” on which he served as a writer. He later created and starred in HBO’s comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Before his television career, he worked as a stand-up comedian.

An episode of “Curb” featured David’s character landing a role in the Broadway musical “The Producers.” His character ended up flubbing his lines in front of a live theater audience.
