Having retired the power saw and meat cleaver from the Showtime series “Dexter,” Michael C. Hall will don a wig and lipstick for his role as the transgender rock star in the Broadway revival of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.”

Producers announced this week that Hall will join the musical on Oct. 16 and is scheduled to stay through Jan. 4. The role of Hedwig is currently being played by Andrew Rannells, who took over in August after Neil Patrick Harris left the production, which is running at the Belasco Theatre in New York.

Hall was on Broadway last season in the play “The Realistic Joneses” by Will Eno. The actor has previously starred in the musicals “Chicago” and “Cabaret” on Broadway.

“Hedwig” opened on Broadway in April and won multiple Tony Awards, including the prizes for musical revival and Harris’ performance. The musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask was first performed in 1998 and had a long off-Broadway run. It was later made into a movie that was released in 2001.
