The streets of downtown Los Angeles will be alive with the sound of music next year.

A production of “The Sound of Music” will have its premiere at the Ahmanson Theatre in L.A. in September 2015 followed by a North American tour, organizers announced on Thursday. The new staging of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical will be directed by Tony Award-winning director Jack O’Brien.

“The Sound of Music” will be part of the Ahmanson’s 2015-16 season, a spokeswoman for Center Theatre Group said. No dates or additional cities have been announced, though tour organizers said in a release that the production will travel for “multiple seasons, playing multi-week and week-long engagements.”

It remains unclear whether producers intend to bring the production to Broadway, and no casting has been announced for the tour. “The Sound of Music” was last revived on Broadway in 1998, in a staging that featured Rebecca Luker as Maria von Trapp.

The new production of “The Sound of Music” will debut in the 50th anniversary year of the 1965 movie version starring Julie Andrews. It is being produced by NETworks Presentations, a manager and producer of touring stage shows, which is working in collaboration with Rodgers & Hammerstein: An Imagem Company, which owns the rights to the composers’ catalog.

Last year, NBC produced a live broadcast of the musical starring country singer Carrie Underwood. The broadcast was a big ratings draw for the network despite criticism of the acting.
