Tom Hanks could make Broadway debut in Nora Ephron play

Tom Hanks is in discussions to make his Broadway debut in a play written by his frequent screen collaborator Nora Ephron. The New York Post reported Wednesday that the play, titled “Lucky Guy,” is a biographical drama about the newspaper columnist Mike McAlary and that it would debut next season in January.

Ephron’s play would follow the career of McAlary, who wrote for the New York Daily News, one of the city’s largest tabloids. McAlary won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998 for his coverage of the Abner Louima scandal in which a Haitian man was assaulted and sodomized by New York City police.

McAlary died in 1998 from cancer. His life has been previously adapted for the stage by Dan Klores in a play titled “The Wood,” which ran at New York’s Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in 2011.

The Post reports that Tony-winning director George C. Wolfe will stage the play. Ephron worked as a journalist for the New York Post before becoming a screenwriter. (McAlary also worked at the Post for a period before joining the Daily News.)

Hanks has collaborated with Ephron on popular movies such as “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail.”

The actor’s wife, Rita Wilson, appeared in an L.A. stage production written by Ephron and her sister, Delia, titled “Love, Loss and What I Wore” that ran at the Geffen Playhouse in 2010.
