Two world premieres -- by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies and singer-songwriter Jonathan Brielle -- a play by Pulitzer winner Robert Schenkkan and another in the Hershey Felder “Composer Sonata” trilogy are slated for the Geffen Playhouse‘s 2008-09 season, announced today.

“Time Stands Still” (Feb. 11-March 15), by Margulies, a Geffen-commissioned project formerly titled “The Elephant in the Room,” revolves around a journalistic team and longtime couple affected by shifting perspectives. Margulies won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for “Dinner With Friends,” which ran at the Geffen in 2000 and at South Coast Repertory in 1998.

Brielle’s “Nightmare Alley” (June 24-July 26, 2009) is a dark carnival musical based on the William Lindsay Gresham novel and cult-classic film. It will be directed by Geffen producing director Gilbert Cates.

“By the Waters of Babylon” (Nov. 5-Dec. 7) revolves around a romance that takes place over one afternoon between two relative strangers. Shenkkan won the 1992 Pulitzer for his epic, “The Kentucky Cycle,” which played at the Mark Taper Forum in 1992.

The season opener, “Beethoven As I Knew Him” (Aug. 27-Oct. 12), ends actor-pianist Felder’s musical trilogy, following his portrayals of Chopin and George Gershwin. Felder will reprise “George Gershwin Alone” Dec. 19-Jan. 4.

One additional play, scheduled to run April 22-May 24, 2009, will be announced at a later date, as will shows scheduled for the smaller Audrey Skirball Kenis space.
