French masterpieces from Centre Pompidou arrive in Shanghai

Paris’ Centre Pompidou, one of the world’s leading contemporary and modern artmuseums, has for the first time joined forces with a public artmuseum in China.

The exhibition “Electric Fields: Surrealism and Beyond — La Collection du Centre Pompidou” brings French art masterpieces to Shanghai, according to artdaily.org. It opened Sunday at the Power Station of Art, as part of the Shanghai Biennale.

To realize the “Electric Fields” exhibition, Centre Pompidou sent 65 cases of video art, paintings, sculptures and manuscripts to Shanghai. According to a spokesperson for Power Station of Art, Xiang Liping, the works are divided into six different themes of surrealism, featuring surrealist masters such as French Dadaist Marcel Duchamp.

The show’s title is a dual nod, playing off both the name of the venue, a former electric power station, and Andre Breton and Philippe Soupault’s pioneering work of literary surrealism, “The Magnetic Fields,” written in 1919.

Only one month ago, the Musee d’Orsay’s 19th century French artworks went on display at the Shanghai China Art Museum.

The “Electric Fields” exhibit will run through March 15.
