Gustavo Dudamel goes Kubrick for debut album with Berlin Philharmonic
Gustavo Dudamel’s debut album with the Berlin Philharmonic will be released in September and will spotlight music by Richard Strauss, including “Thus Spake Zarathustra,” “Don Juan” and “Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks.”
The album, which is scheduled to be released by Deutsche Grammophon on Sept. 17, was recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic during concerts in 2012 and 2013. The release of the album will also mark a special occasion -- next year is the 150th birthday of Strauss, who was born in Munich.
Dudamel said in a statement that the recording was both an honor and a challenge because “as soon as you think of ‘Zarathustra,’ you think of the Berlin Philharmonic, and of [Herbert von] Karajan -- there’s a direct relationship between them.”

“Zarathustra” is perhaps best known as the theme for the 1968 Stanley Kubrick movie “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
Deutsche Grammophon has created a video trailer for the album, which features Kubrickian imagery of outer space. The trailer can be seen in the video above.
Dudamel, who is the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is scheduled to appear at the Hollywood Bowl from Aug. 11 to 15, conducting performances of Verdi’s “Aida” and “Requiem.”
