Festival of Books: Artists’ Row enters the literary feast’s frame
Art aficionados planning to attend the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books this weekend will be able to watch artists create works live on the USC site as well as hear the many assembled writers.
Artists’ Row, a new feature at the festival, will house six artists who specialize in various media as they create pieces guided by the festival’s theme, “Inspire Your Fire.” The artists will work throughout the weekend at the gathering at the University of Southern California; their pieces are expected to be finished by the end of the day on Sunday.
Five of the artists were invited by the festival, while the sixth was selected through the online “Inspire Us” contest held by The Times.

The invited artists are Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia, a Los Angeles based artist and assistant professor at Otis College of Art and Design born in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico; Andy Robert, a multi-disciplinary artist based in Los Angeles who will focus on black-and-white line drawings for the festival; Jena Priebe, a conceptual sculptor who created flying book installations at the Last Bookstore; Essi Zimm, an artist who grew up in a bookstore and specializes in large-scale paintings and collages; and Devngosha, a fine art collaborative consisting of Devin Liston and Gosha Levochkin that creates mixed media works on canvas.
Additionally, Arists’ Row will feature Young and Zum, the “Inspire Us” contest winners. Young and Zum are artists Young Summers and Ann Zumwinkle, who will be doing a collaborative mural at the festival.
The Festival of Books at USC will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
