‘Wolverine,’ ‘Smurfs 2’ top DVD and Blu-ray sales chart
A mutant comic book hero and a crew of little blue children’s characters ruled the home video sales chart in their first weeks in release.
“The Wolverine,” the sixth film in 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men” franchise, was the top-selling DVD and Blu-ray title for the week that ended Dec. 7, according to Rentrak. Starring Hugh Jackman as the title character, the movie made $132 million in its domestic box office run. Critics generally approved of the entry, which earned a 69% “fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes.
“The Smurfs 2,” a critically panned sequel with Neil Patrick Harris, took second place, while the teen action-adventure “Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” debuted in fourth, behind the three-week-old computer animated Disney movie disc “Planes.”
With the holiday shopping season in full swing, box sets appeared on the chart, including the full-series package of AMC’s meth drama “Breaking Bad” and a James Bond five-decade retrospective.
Summit Entertainment’s “Red 2” was the top rental.
