Palm Springs International Film Festival announces awards

The Golden Globes aren’t the only awards being presented Sunday: The 24th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival announced its winners on Sunday afternoon.

Wayne Blair’s “The Sapphires,” an Australian musical-drama about an all-female Aboriginal singing group, won the Mercedes-Benz Audience Award for narrative feature. Runner-ups included “Any Day Now,” “Emperor” and the Oscar-nominated foreign-language films “Kon-Tiki” and “A Royal Affair.”

“Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey,” Ramona Diaz’s documentary about rock band Journey’s efforts to get a new lead singer, won the Audience Award for feature documentary. Runner-ups included “Defiant Requiem” and “No Place on Earth.”

The Israeli drama “Fill the Void,” directed by Rama Burshtein, won the FIPRESCI Prize for foreign-language film of the year. The movie revolves around an 18-year-old girl in Tel Aviv’s Hassidic community.

The FIPRESCI Prize for the actor of the year in a foreign-language film was shared by Cosimo Rega, Salvatore Striano and Giovanni Arcuri, for the Italian drama “Caesar Must Die.” Emilie Dequenne of the Belgium drama “Our Children” won the FIPRESCI Prize for actress of the year in a foreign-language film.

The New Voice/New Visions Award, given to a first-time feature filmmaker whose movie is currently without U.S. distribution, went to “The Cleaner,” a Peruvian drama from Adrian Saba, about a man who cleans up after the dying when an epidemic hits Lima, Peru.

“Blancanieves,” the Spanish black-and-white silent version of Snow White directed by Pablo Berger, won the Cine Latino Award. “Stolen Seas,” directed by Thymaya Payne, earned the John Schlesinger Award, which is given to a first-time documentary filmmaker. “Stolen Seas” offers an inside view of Somali piracy.

The crime caper “Jump,” an Irish-English co-production directed by Kieron J. Walsh, received the HP Bridging the Borders Award. And the Cinema Without Borders Special Jury Award went to Goran Paskaljevic’s “When Day Breaks,” from Serbia, Croatia and France.
