MOVIES

Red State Kevin Smith’s self-distributed new film “Red State” might be the director’s first foray into the horror genre, but there remain vestiges of his trademark snappy banter and offbeat humor. Don’t get the wrong idea, however — “Red State” is no comedy. The controversial film, which stars Michael Parks, Melissa Leo and John Goodman, will screen for one week and Smith will attend each showing (except those on Wednesday), with an audience Q&A to follow. New Beverly Cinema, 7165 W. Beverly Blvd., L.A. 6:30 and 9 p.m. Fri.-Thu. $20 (some shows sold out). (323) 938-4038. www.coopersdell.com.
