Hailing from San Francisco but possessed with a pan-cultural spirit far more difficult to pin down, Rupa and the April Fishes mix rock, gypsy music, reggae and Malian guitar tangles for an intoxicating live mix led by multilingual vocalist Rupa Marya. The group has performed with Devotchka and Manu Chao, and elements of its new album “Build” focus on social justice with references to Tahrir Square, Guantanamo and the Occupy movement.
