Quick Takes: ‘Homeland’ ratings up

Looks like there is an Emmy ratings bounce.

“Homeland,” fresh from its surprise Emmy win for drama series last month, scored with its Season 2 premiere on Sunday, delivering 1.7 million viewers for Showtime, according to Nielsen.

That was a 60% jump compared with the Season 1 premiere last year.

With the program running three times Sunday night, the entire audience was 2.1 million — giving the show its highest viewership total ever.

Overall, Showtime had its most-watched Sunday ever.

Court sides with Don Johnson

A divided appellate court upheld Don Johnson’s multimillion jury award over profits from the series “Nash Bridges” but cut its amount by more than $8 million on Monday.

The California 2nd District Court of Appeal panel voted 2-1 to uphold a verdict that determined the actor was owed millions from the hit series, but the panel reduced the amount from $23.2 million to $15 million.

Johnson’s original 2010 verdict was appealed by the series’ producers and financiers. One justice agreed with the companies that Johnson’s verdict should be overturned because his claims were barred by the statute of limitations, but two justices sided with the actor.

“Nash Bridges” aired for six seasons on CBS.

Tyler Perry inks deal with OWN

OWN announced Monday an exclusive partnership with Tyler Perry that includes two new scripted series for the network to premiere in mid-2013.

The deal would make the Oprah Winfrey Network the “singular destination” for any new television series or projects from the multi-hyphenate mogul. It also marks OWN’s first foray into original scripted series as the network eases into a groove after a wobbly start.

News of the new venture comes as the network has seen some improvement. It closed its third quarter with double-digit percentage ratings gains over last year among women ages 25-54.

Adele records ‘Skyfall’ theme

The Bond theme song will once again be in the hands of a British artist.

Soulful singer Adele has confirmed rumors that essentially began the day “Skyfall,” the third James Bond film to feature Daniel Craig as the secret agent, went into production.

Adele wrote the song with her longtime producer-collaborator Paul Epworth, also her partner on 2010’s smash “Rolling in the Deep.” The song will premiere on Adele’s website on Thursday at about 4:07 p.m. PST.

“Skyfall” marks the first new song Adele has recorded since “21” became an international phenomena. Since its release in early 2011, the album has sold 9.8 million copies in the U.S. alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Adele’s “Skyfall” was recorded at the famed Abbey Road Studios in London with a 77-piece orchestra.

Companies like ‘Good People’

David Lindsay-Abaire’s Tony Award-nominated play “Good People” tops the list of most produced plays nationwide during the 2012-13 season, according to the theater industry’s largest trade group.

The Theatre Communications Group revealed on Monday that the Top 10 list also includes Bruce Norris’ “Clybourne Park,” Matthew Lopez’s “The Whipping Man” and the musical “Next to Normal.”

Lindsay-Abaire’s other works — including “Rabbit Hole” — have long been among the top produced works, but “Good People” marks his first time atop the list, which was compiled from 415 member theaters. Seventeen theaters produced “Good People” this season, among them the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood. The play is currently running at the Old Globe in San Diego.

The list omits holiday-themed shows and Shakespeare works.

Minn. orchestra cancels 17 shows

The Minnesota Orchestra has canceled its concerts through Nov. 25 as a lockout of musicians takes effect.

The cancellations announced Monday affect 17 performances.

Management and musicians failed to reach a new agreement Sunday before the old contract expired.
