MTV renews ‘Awkward’ for a super-sized Season 3

At this point, MTV has definitely DTR’d its relationship with its scripted comedy “Awkward”: They’re going steady. To prove they’re taking things to the next level, the network has renewed the series for an extended third season.

Its third outing will offer a heavier dose of awkwardness with 20 episodes, which is nearly double the numbers of its freshman and sophomore seasons.

The series, which stars Ashley Rickards as a teenager struggling to navigate the tortuous world of high school, is currently in its second season and draws 1.8-million total viewers per week, according to the network.

The renewal comes after the network’s announcement that “Teen Wolf” would return for a third season, also with a super-sized order, getting 24 episodes.

MTV continues its push in the scripted arena in the coming months. After an unsuccessful attempt to reboot British-import “Skins,” the network is bringing another series from across the pond, this time remaking “The Inbetweeners.” And fall will see the rollout of “Underemployed.”
