The envelope-pushing series, which boasts Jennifer Lopez as an executive producer, centers on a biracial lesbian couple and their brood made up of biological, adoptive and foster children.

Paired with “Switched at Birth” earlier this summer, it quickly found its footing on the network. The first half of its first season premiered to strong numbers and held steady from there -- it was the top cable series of the summer among the 12-34 age group and females 12-34 demographics. Its summer finale drew just over 2 million viewers, setting a series high in total viewers and key demos.

“ ‘The Fosters’ has demonstrated its ability to build an audience, and the creative team’s compelling storytelling assures us that there will be more growth in upcoming seasons,” read a statement from Kate Juergens, the network’s chief creative officer and executive vice president of programming. “The show’s dynamic cast and groundbreaking story lines resonate with our core viewers and leave them wanting more.”

The renewal comes as production continues on the first season, which returns with new episodes in January.
