Andy Serkis imagines a conversation between Caesar and Gollum

Share

Andy Serkis is always game to give the fans what they want. Whether he’s on a set or at a convention, his range of creature voices, including Gollum from the “Lord of the Rings” movies and Caesar, the proud chimpanzee of the “Planet of the Apes” films. Sitting on the couch on “Conan” is no exception.

Serkis sat down with Conan O’Brien and Andy Richter on Thursday’s show to promote his latest motion-capture performance in “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” Though he couldn’t talk much about his upcoming role in the new “Star Wars” movie, he was more than happy to delve into his past performances.

First, Serkis showed O’Brien and Richter how they, too, could emote like an ape. O’Brien never really committed to it, but Richter looked ready to flip a coffee table in an ape-like rage.

But then O’Brien put Serkis on the spot and asked him to imagine Gollum having a phone conversation with Caesar. You can’t imagine Daniel Day-Lewis agreeing to imagine a conversation between Abraham Lincoln and Daniel Plainview, no matter how glorious that may be, but Serkis was more than happy to go along.

He was able to instantly summon up Smeagol, his alter ego Gollum, and Caesar, the leader of the apes.

So what did Caesar and Gollum talk about? Watch the video above to find out.
