‘Being Mary Jane’ gets season four renewal from BET

It looks like being Mary Jane has its perks.

BET has renewed the Gabrielle Union-led “Being Mary Jane” for a fourth season.

The announcement came during the network’s panel Wednesday at the Television Critics Assn. news media tour in Pasadena.

Union was on hand Wednesday for the news — actually, she helped nudge it out of BET programming president Stephen Hill when she made a surprise appearance and stormed the stage during Hill’s opening remarks and asked if the series would be coming back.

The assurance of the show’s fate follows the departure of creator and showrunner Mara Brooks Akil. It has not been announced who will assume the role of showrunner on “Being Mary Jane.”

The series, a strong player for BET, wrapped its third season in December. Production on the fourth season is slated to begin in Atlanta this year.
