“Tyrant” will return to FX for a third season, the network announced Thursday.

The series, from Emmy Award-winning producer Howard Gordon (“24,” “Homeland”), follows an American family drawn into the inner workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation. Cast members include Adam Rayner, Jennifer Finnigan and Ashraf Barhom.

FX said it will air the 10-episode third season in 2016.

The “second season took the show to a new level thanks to the skill and direction of Howard, Chris and Glenn and their creative team, the exceptional cast and a story steeped in family, loyalty and intrigue,” Eric Schrier, co-president of original programming at FX Networks and FX Productions, said in a statement. “We look forward to the next chapter and a sensational third season.”

Season 1 of “Tyrant” received mixed reviews, with a Muslim civil rights group expressing concern about the show’s “potential Islamophobic stereotyping.” The network responded in 2014, noting that producers have “had internal and external discussions to address those concerns.”

Critics were more positive overall about the second season, which averaged 2.47 million total viewers in live+7 Nielsen ratings.
