The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. traces the history of black America from the 16th century through the present day, in this new six-part series. The opener recalls the arrival of the first Africans, both free and enslaved, in North America and chronicles the rise of slavery. 8 p.m. KOCE

Pretty Little Liars This new episode of the teen drama helps launch the spinoff series “Ravenswood,” which follows immediately. 8 and 9 p.m. ABC Family
