Cerre spring 2014 review

It feels like good things are happening for Flavie and Clayton Webster, designers of the Los Angeles-based line Cerre. Their collections just keep getting better and better.

And, after providing custom leather jackets and bags for Rooney Mara’s title character in the movie “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” Flavie and Webster were tapped again by costume designer Trish Summerville for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” opening Nov. 22. (They made more than 150 pieces for the film.)

I stopped by their store and studio in West Hollywood recently to take a look at their spring 2014 collection.

The inspiration: The coast of the South of France, where Flavie grew up, especially “off-times at the beach when it’s more tranquil and contemplative,” she said. “We wanted to translate that wintery vibe into the color palette, which was taken from photos of Bordeaux and closer to home, from Malibu.”

The look: Cool summer in the city. Asian-inspired tailoring, chalky pastel colors and more of a ladylike sensibility than we’ve seen before from the brand, which started out with edgy leather goods.

Key pieces: Long line white silk linen jacket with the ease of a kimono paired with white pleat-front trousers. Washed out abstract print pleated skirt and cropped blouse. Pastel blue leather cropped swing jacket. White, geometrically cut linen clutch coat with contrast piping. Sleeveless black jumpsuit with deep front pockets and enough polish to take you from the office to dinner. Suntan-color leather blouson dress. Navy blue drop waist pleated minidress. And the duo’s first evening dress, a black and white wrap style with kimono sleeves.

The verdict: A breath of fresh air. Full of salable, wearable pieces that work well together. This collection should put the Claytons up and over.
