Shopping: Plush show for upscale parents

Special to the Los Angeles Times

If chi-chi baby and toddler gear makes your heart beat a little faster, the Plush consumer trade show (short for “posh little urbanites show”) will have you praising the luxury gods.

The show, which is scheduled to take place Sunday, June 5, at downtown venue Vibiana, is essentially a mega-mall for swank baby gear —showcasing high-end fashion, gear (strollers, carriers and the like), gourmet food and services for tiny tots.

Founded by Jina Park, who formerly worked in the sponsorship office of L.A. mall developer Caruso Affiliated, Plush’s first-ever exhibition and shopping event will corral 45 baby and toddler brands, including party planning and photography firms, and luxury crib makers.

From booths and, in a few cases, sophisticated installations, such as high-end nurseries, vendors will sell their wares at discounted prices and pass out swag.

Park, who has toddlers of her own, came up with the idea for the show a couple of years ago, “after I noticed that there’s a huge baby boom out there,” she said. She added, “All of my mommy friends and I were trying to find out what’s the newest crib, carrier, diaper bag. I thought, ‘We need to have a luxury-based event where parents can go and learn about different products and services.’”

Brands scheduled to show at the event include PetitNest — a décor company co-owned by actress Tiffani Thiessen that sells $590 baby sheet sets — Layla Grace, Storksak Diaper Bags and Happy Baby Foods.

ErgoBaby Carriers, which makes one of the most ubiquitous baby carriers in L.A., will be offering free loaner carriers for moms and dads holding VIP tickets (complete with sanitary teething guards). “I thought it might get a little crazy with all those strollers,” noted Park, who has also arranged for a company to give complimentary stroller cleanings to VIP ticket holders.

The event will also feature activities for toddlers, such as the Rocking With Daddy station, where tots can bang on drums with dad, and an art enclave where kids can decorate nightlights.

Local baby shop the Pump Station will be hosting a nursing area, and event hosts Catt Sadler and Jason Kennedy — both hosts on the E! Network — will moderate various raffles, which will include the biggie giveaway of a $1,400 crib by Newport Cottage Crib.

“It’s crazy trying to keep up with all the new products and services,” Park said. “Parents are the absolute busiest people in the world. At the show, you can take in everything at once.”

The Plush show will take place June 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Vibiana, 214 S. Main St., Los Angeles. (213) 626-1507. Tickets are available at Plushshow.com. General admission tickets are $25, or $40 per couple. VIP tickets are $80, or $140 per couple. Kids 3 years old and under are free.
