Golden Globes 2013: Hits and misses on the menswear front
In addition to the sartorial standouts that have become familiar to watchers of awards-show red carpets over the years (George Clooney and Jon Hamm, to name just two), there seemed to be a fresh crop of style-conscious (and in a couple of cases, -unconscious) guys who managed to make the standard-issue tuxedo an expression of individuality.
Below are a couple notable looks -- at both ends of the spectrum:
Hits
Presenter Aziz Ansari (“Parks and Recreation”) looked particularly sharp in his slim, trim black Dior Homme single-button peak lapel tuxedo and black satin bow tie -- with just the perfect amount of white shirt cuff at the wrist.
Nominee Bradley Cooper (“Silver Linings Playbook”) wasn’t just looking good in his black, one-button, peak lapel Tom Ford for the Green Carpet Challenge tuxedo, he was apparently doing good too -- raising awareness with an eco-friendly two-piece, made-to-order suit made from OEKO-TEX certified, low-environmental-impact, European-spun and -woven wool suiting as part of Livia Firth’s ongoing efforts to use the red carpet as a showcase for green fashion projects.
Our only complaint? The bow tie seemed just a hair on the small side for Cooper -- but we’re just assuming it was an eco-conscious decision to conserve fabric.
Misses
While there were a handful of guys making a definitive style statement in a white tie (both bows and long versions were in evidence) Will Ferrell’s struck an off-note with us -- though perhaps that had more to do with the boxy-looking peak lapel, double-breasted tuxedo jacket that was more at fault than the long white necktie.
Quentin Tarantino wore a long, black tie -- along with a black dress shirt and two-button notch lapel jacket, a monochromatic ink-blot of an ensemble that made the “Django Unchained” director come off as a bit disheveled.
Details we wished we’d seen
Menswear is all about the details, and as the red carpet crowd got rolling last night we caught wind of a fun little detail that we never had a chance to see for ourselves. According to a 20th Century Fox rep, “Life of Pi” actor Suraj Sharma and the film’s director, Ang Lee, were wearing cuff links in the shape of the pi symbol (π) -- that had been gifts from the studio.
