Michelle Obama chose Jason Wu for an inaugural gown for a second time. At husband Barack Obama’s first inauguration in 2009, she wore a white, one-shoulder column gown to the round of evening balls. For his second inauguration Monday the first lady chose a ruby red chiffon and velvet halter gown. Times’ Fashion Critic Booth Moore found it to be a more self-assured and powerful choice. Earlier in the day, Beyonce and Jay Z were among the style notables at the inauguration. Bey, who sang the national anthem, wore an elegant floor-length Emilio Pucci gown with floral detail and a knee-length Christian Dior fur coat. Jay-Z was dapper in a Tom Ford suit, tie and a scarf. [Styleite]

While mom Michelle Obama drew tons of attention in her custom-made Thom Browne fit ‘n’ flare coat at the morning ceremony, first daughters Sasha and Malia were fashionable too. Malia Obama wore a fuchsia J. Crew coat and Sasha wore a periwinkle coat by Kate Spade. [New York Times]

Raf Simons showed his first spring couture collection as head of design for Dior on Monday. Fifty models with pixie haircuts showed asymetrical gowns, layered suits and delicate embroidered pieces in a palette that mixed acid yellow with ice blue, lilac, black and red. Some sheer panels seemed placed for disaster, though -- or at least for future wardrobe malfunctions. [Cut]

John Galliano, who is back from exile and interning for a few weeks at Oscar de la Renta’s New York studio, was reportedly seen lunching on Sunday with Vogue’s Grace Coddington. Rumor has it that Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour brokered the intern arrangement for Galliano, who was fired as creative chief at Dior -- and subsequently sought treatment for substance abuse -- after some racist bar rants came to light in 2011.
