You only had to take one look at the super sexy short Salvatore Ferragamo dresses that Jacqui Getty, Demi Moore and others were wearing Thursday night at the Chateau Marmont to know that the house of Ferragamo is experiencing a serious renaissance in chic, thanks to the direction of designer Massimiliano Giornetti.

Where Ferragamo may once have been your mother’s (or your grandmother’s) brand, famously keeping Margaret Thatcher and other helmet-haired conservative ladies shod in classic bow pumps, it’s taken an exciting turn since Giornetti was appointed creative director in 2010.

That’s reason enough to celebrate in Hollywood, where Getty and Harper’s Bazaar hosted a dinner and fashion show in the Chateau’s Bungalow 1 on Thursday night, and where the brand has deep roots. (Salvatore Ferragamo, the label’s namesake, started out here, emigrating from Southern Italy in 1923 and opening the Hollywood Boot Shop, where he built the foundation for today’s global luxury brand by becoming cobbler to the stars.)

Although Giornetti couldn’t make it to L.A. for this trip (he’s working on the next women’s collection, which will be presented in Milan in just a few weeks), his creativity was showcased on the lovely ladies who wore his creations, and on the runway, where guests got a chance to preview looks from the spring-summer 2013 collection.

“The mix of textures and the craftsmanship really inspire me,” Getty said of her dress, a curve-hugging cream crochet and chain mail design. The L.A.-based hostess extraordinaire and contributing editor to Harper’s Bazaar said of Ferragamo, “It’s classic and now it has an edge.”

On the runway, the clothes had a casual, utilitarian feel, with buttery soft leather trench coats, paper bag waist pants and wrap skirts, plus a red-carpet worthy, draped minidress embroidered with gold beads. On the feet? Knee-high peep toe boots (Moore was wearing a pair for the evening).

Getty put together a great group of guests spanning film, music, literary and fashion worlds, including her daughter, Gia Coppola, plus Emma Roberts, Nicole Richie, Peggy Lipton, Linda Ramone and J.D. King, Rosanna Arquette, Keegan Allen, Bret Easton Ellis, Pamela Skaist-Levy, Gela Nash-Taylor, Rachel Zoe and Rodger Berman, Arianne Phillips and more.

You can check out the spring-summer 2013 collection at a trunk show Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Salvatore Ferragamo, 357 N. Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills.

[For the record, 1 p.m. Jan. 29: An earlier version of this post said that Linda Ramone attended the dinner with Johnny Ramone. She attended it with J.D. King. Johnny Ramone died in 2004. ]
