NEW YORK -- Tracy Reese, still on a high after Michelle Obama wore the designer’s fuchsia and coral jacquard dress when she gave her speech at the Democratic National Convention last week, showed her spring-summer 2013 collection to a packed house Sunday.

The dress was such a big hit that Reese’s website crashed the night of the speech, and her office has been fielding calls from women wanting to pre-order the exact style the first lady wore.

“We’re about to get very busy,” Reese said backstage Sunday, explaining that she is rushing the style into production.

The inspiration: David Hockney landscapes, tribal prints, beading and fringe taken from African, Incan, Indian and Hawaiian culture.

The look: Sporty and feminine. Bright colors contrasted with neutrals. Mixed prints, embroidery and bead patterns. Easy-fitting separates. Halter tops and pull-on pants, some with panels of shingle-sequins; wispy halter tops and tunics; mixed jacquard moto jackets; perforated leather shifts and cape-back chiffon dresses. Black, white and khaki palette punched up with shades of green, blue, ocher, dusty rose and tangerine.

The scene: Madness. The designer’s publicist admitted Reese might have gotten a bigger venue had she known there would be so much interest. Clearly, POTUS wasn’t the only one to get a boost from the first lady’s appearance.

The verdict: Lighthearted, cheerful clothes. But nothing approaching the magic of Obama in that dress.
