Celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff launches cosmetics line

Share

As fall approaches, there has been lots of publicity about some high-end makeup launches by prestigious fashion designers, such as Michael Kors’ Sexy, Sporty and Glam collections (available at Macy’s and michaelkors.com) and Marc Jacobs’ 120-piece cosmetics collection (available at Sephora and marcjacobs.com).

Both collections went on sale this month, to much fanfare.

But another notable cosmetics collection also launched this summer, a bit more quietly. It’s from renowned makeup artist Pati Dubroff, whose celebrity clientele has included Katy Perry, Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julianne Moore, Charlize Theron and Drew Barrymore.

Dubroff created Pati Dubroff Beauty, which is available at Costco and is a bit more affordable -- albeit a bit more basic -- than the Kors and Jacobs offerings. The collection consists of three kits: Perfect Palette, which includes 12 eye shadows and a liner pencil ($16.99); Visionary Eyes, a set of five eye crayons ($16.99); and Luster Lips, a set of five tinted lip balm crayons, which can be used alone or layered to create new colors ($14.99). Compare those prices to the Kors’ collection, where a single lip lacquer retails for $24 and to Jacobs’, where a lip gel is $30.

The colors in Pati Dubroff Beauty are more limited, consisting of neutral shades. We had three women test-drive the collection for All the Rage, and they agreed these aren’t the colors you’ll wear for a night on the town. But they’d be perfect for a casual weekend or for work -- and after all, Costco isn’t a place where you’d go for glam, anyway.

The eye shadow palette was easy to use with its soft, easy-to-apply colors, they said. The eye crayons made for good liners, but didn’t work too well as shadow -- too hard to blend, the testers said. But the lip balm crayons went on smoothly and easily, felt good on the lips and were a nice addition to the makeup bag.

In fact, with Kors, Jacobs and DuBroff to choose from -- or to mix and match -- it should be pretty easy to stock your makeup bag this fall to deliver looks for any occasion.
