The number of three-star restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area has doubled, as Benu and Saison join long-time favorites French Laundry and the Restaurant at Meadowood at the top of the Michelin guide’s culinary heap for 2015.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Paolo Lucchese, these are the first two restaurants within the city of San Francisco to earn three stars. The French Laundry and the Restaurant at Meadowood are both in the Napa Valley.

They join New York City’s Per Se (also run by the French Laundry’s Thomas Keller), Masa, Jean Georges, Le Bernardin, Eleven Madison Park and Brooklyn’s Chef’s Table in the three-star category.

In addition, San Francisco’s Aquarello was promoted from one star to two. Berkeley’s Chez Panisse, which lost its single star in 2011, still is without one. Los Gatos’ Manresa, which suffered a devastating fire in July, held on to its two-star rating.
