Dead whale washes ashore Ventura County beach

Mike Lindbery of Ojai gets a close look at a 45-foot California gray whale that washed ashore on a narrow, rocky beach 10 miles north of Ventura after dying at least three weeks ago, scientists said Monday. The body of the adult female was too decomposed for scientists to determine a cause of death, said Michelle Berman,„© a biologist with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

Officials say a whale has been found dead on a Ventura County beach.

Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History spokeswoman Easter Moorman tells the Ventura County Star the whale washed ashore earlier Monday north of Hobson Park. The type of whale has not yet been determined.

Gray whales annually migrate through the Santa Barbara Channel on their voyage from Mexico to Alaska.

Last year, two blue whales washed ashore in Ventura County. Officials believed those whales had been struck by ships.
