Orange Lutheran 35, Mater Dei 14
After years of cruising through the obscure back alleys of the Southern Section small-school divisions, the Orange Lutheran football team could finally say it arrived on Main Street Saturday night.

The moment was etched with a 35-14 victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei in a nonleague game played in front of approximately 7,500 on the visiting Monarchs’ normal home turf at Santa Ana Stadium.

“It shows we have turned the corner,” said wide receiver/defensive back Brendan Circle, who caught four passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. “We were ready to go.”

While playing in the small-school divisions, Orange Lutheran often came close but never won a section championship. The Lancers lost in consecutive Division X title games in 1994 and ‘95, and fell again in the Division XI final in 2001.

The Lancers moved up to Division VI last season and upgraded their schedule with the addition of Mater Dei, winner of five Division I titles since 1991. A one-point loss to the Monarchs in their first meeting last September only fueled the Lancers’ motivation to win Saturday night.

Big plays marked the first half as the Lancers scored both first-half touchdowns on long passes from quarterback Seth Blackamore. The first covered 49 yards to Circle on Lutheran’s first possession. The second deep pass went 73 yards to Anthony Vernaglia and gave the Lancers a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

A personal foul on the opening kickoff of the second half gave Orange Lutheran good field position near midfield. On third-and-11, Circle made an acrobatic catch in double coverage along the sideline, moving the ball 27 yards to the Mater Dei 16.

Two plays later, John Ausmus scored on a 10-yard run for a 21-7 lead.

Alex Mason scored on a one-yard run late in the fourth quarter and then returned a fumble 30 yards to give the Lancers a 35-7 lead.

Orange Lutheran officials decided to move the game from the Lancers’ regular home field at Brea Olinda High to Santa Ana Stadium because of the larger seating capacity.

Mission Viejo 14, Fountain Valley 13
Fountain Valley Coach Eric Johnson said he had been thinking about beating Mission Viejo for a long time, so when the opportunity arose Friday night at Huntington Beach High, he had to go for it.

After the Barons scored a touchdown with one second left to play and trailing by one point, they went for the two-point conversion but came up short.

The teams, before the game, had agreed to play overtime, but that wasn’t really an option for Johnson.

“Our guys were tired,” Johnson said. “I wanted to decide it like that. I wanted to beat them this way.”

For Mission Viejo, No. 2 in The Times’ preseason rankings, it was a bit of a wake-up call.

“We’re a young team,” Diablo Coach Bob Johnson said. “We do whatever we have to do to win.”

Backup quarterback Chris Debowski gave Fountain Valley (1-1) the chance to end the Diablos’ winning streak at 28 games.

Replacing Kyle Feiler with 6 minutes 34 seconds left to play and his team trailing, 14-7, Debowski drove the Barons 88 yards in 15 plays, including converting and converted three fourth-down situations. He capped the drive on a nine-yard sweep, diving into the end zone to make it 14-13. On the two-point try, however, when he couldn’t find an open receiver he tried to run it in again but was stopped at the two.

Mission Viejo (1-0) took a 7-0 lead with 8:48 to play in the first half on a five-yard run by fullback Jedidiah Collins.

Stalled after a penalty that gave them a fourth and eight on the Barons’ 14, quarterback Mark Sanchez ran to the five for the first down.

The Huskies (1-0) marched 47 yards in eight plays on their opening drive and got some help from a pass interference call. They took a 7-0 lead four minutes into the game on a four-yard scoring pass from quarterback Philip Guerrero to Jeremy Payton.

Claremont running back Jamaal Floyd cut the margin to 7-6 with a four-yard run with 10:49 to go in the second quarter. Claremont was called for a penalty because it had only nine men on the field for the ensuing PAT and had two others enter the field late. That backed the ball up five yards, and kicker Otis Holt rushed his attempt and it curled low and to the left.

With 3:13 left in the third quarter and trailing 14-6, Claremont had a third-and-one at the South Hills four-yard line. But quarterback Isaiah Cook and running back Lyle Wise muffed the handoff and fumbled the ball away. Claremont got to the South Hills three-yard line with eight minutes to go, but on fourth-and-one, Cook fumbled a pitch-pass from Floyd and South Hills recovered.

On the next play, South Hills running back Marquis Winbush ran 86 yards for an apparent score. The play was called back for holding.

Tailback Ravonne Gooden scored on touchdown runs of 31 and 60 yards on Kaiser’s first two possessions of the season and the Cats defeated Rancho Cucamonga in a season opener for both teams Thursday at Fontana High.

Running out of a double-tight-end, single-back set, Gooden took his first handoff of the game from quarterback Andrew Matthews and went up the middle on his first touchdown run with four minutes gone in the first quarter.

The play was set up by a Alex Carillo’s interception when Rancho Cucamonga had a second-and-13 situation from its 18-yard line.

Gooden added his 60-yard scoring burst -- his fourth carry of the game -- on a fourth-and-one play on the Cats’ 40-yard line with five minutes left in the same quarter. The yards came much tougher after that, but Gooden finished with 200 of them in 22 carries.
