Henrik Stenson gets pumped up for European Tour championship
The 2014 European Tour’s championship finale lacks some drama this week, with Rory McIlroy already clinching the season-long Race to Dubai title. So runner-up Henrik Stenson needs to find an alternate motivation.
At the very least, the Swedish golfer hopes to defend his title at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
“I haven’t managed to defend a title yet in my career, so it would be a pretty good week to get that monkey off my back,” Stenson said.
McIlroy won the Race to Dubai sitting at home on Sunday when Stenson and his other closest competitors fell short at the Turkish Airlines Open. He had built a sizable lead thanks to victories at the British Open, the PGA Championship and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
“This has obviously been the best season of my career by a long way,” McIlroy said.
In addition to the European title, McIlroy was recently named PGA Tour player of the year.
