Cable TV news ratings: In the Dec. 29 Calendar section, a Quick Takes item about cable TV news ratings for 2011 said that CNN was third behind Fox and MSNBC in prime time and for the day as a whole. CNN was third in prime time but second for the day as a whole, ahead of MSNBC.
Helen Frankenthaler: The obituary of artist Helen Frankenthaler in the Dec. 28 LATExtra said that in 1952 she began using acrylic paint in her “soak stain” technique. She used oil paint in her early works and switched to acrylics later.
