The charred remains discovered this month at the site of a rubbish fire in Northridge are those of a middle-aged man who was possibly homeless, authorities said Sunday.
Coroner’s officials identifed the body as that of William Bret Steele, 49, whose remains were found by firefighters after they extinguished an outdoor fire on Oct. 6 in the 19300 block of Lassen Street.
The rubbish fire was in a tree-lined area just south of Nobel Middle School. Firefighters notified police that a body was at the scene.
The cause of death is under investigation.
