Camaro does ‘doughnuts’ on Golden Gate Bridge, just misses guardrail

A driver who did “doughnuts” on the Golden Gate Bridge in a Chevy Camaro over the weekend was acting “unbelievably dangerous” and “stupid,” local authorities said.

The stunt, caught on film and posted on Instagram, occurred Sunday afternoon and forced motorists in both directions on the bridge to stop as pedestrian tourists looked on.

“You can see that the vehicle is spinning within inches of a guardrail where there are tourists,” CHP Officer Andrew Barclay told the San Francisco Chronicle. “It put a lot of people at risk unnecessarily.”

In the video, the Camaro can be seen doing nearly three full 360-degree turns, leaving a ring of tire marks across three lanes as horns from other cars blare over the engine’s roar. The person who took the video can be heard cheering the stunt.

Now authorities want to find the driver.

“A lot of dumb things happen on the bridge, but not this,” Kary Witt, a bridge manager for the Golden Gate Transportation District, told the Chronicle. “The margin for error out here is pretty small. It’s really kind of shocking when you see people behaving this way.”

It isn’t the first time a group of car enthusiasts have stopped traffic for impromptu stunt shows. In Oakland last year, a number of vehicles blocked a section of Interstate 880 so other drivers could do doughnuts on the highway. Hundreds of so-called “sideshows” have been reported in the Bay Area in recent years.

Locally, four people were arrested last year after a group of motorcycle riders shut down the 10 Freeway in West Covina for a wedding proposal.
