Dead baby found in Kern County residential trash bin

Share

A Kern County man found a dead infant in his trash bin early Friday morning, sheriff’s officials said.

The infant appeared to be no more than several days old when she died, according to a statement from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. An autopsy was yet to be scheduled, but officials said it appeared the death was not “natural.”

The man, identified by the Bakersfield Californian as 53-year-old Reggie Groves, of Oildale, told the newspaper he could tell something was inside his trash can when he went to pull it in.

When Groves looked inside, he saw the body of a baby girl, he told the paper.

“I thought maybe it was a sick joke, a baby doll or something,” Groves told the Californian, noting that the umbilical cord was still attached.

Authorities have classified the case as an ongoing homicide investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (661) 861-3110 or (661) 322-4040.
