Reporting from San Diego — A diver was declared dead Wednesday night after being pulled “unresponsive” from the channel leading to San Diego’s Mission Bay by lifeguards, officials said.
After receiving a distress call at 7 p.m., the lifeguards located the diver beneath the water, loosened his weight belt and pulled him aboard a lifeguard craft. The diver’s friends said he had been beneath the water for four to six minutes, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
The diver, whose name was not released, did not respond to CPR and was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation into the cause of death remained ongoing.
