Newborn safely surrendered in Culver City, the first of 2014
A baby girl became the first newborn in 2014 to be safely surrendered in Los Angeles County over the weekend at a Culver City hospital, officials announced Monday.
The newborn also became the 114th baby to be delivered safely since the Safe Surrender program started nearly 13 years ago, according to Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe’s office.
“There is no better way to start the new year then to learn of the healthy and safe surrender of a newborn baby girl,” Knabe said in a statement. “What could have been a tragic situation is instead a decision that is allowing a child a chance to be part of a loving family.”
The newborn was dropped off Saturday at a Culver City hospital, according to Knabe. The baby was placed in protective custody and will be placed with families approved for adoption by the county Department of Children and Family Services.
The safe surrender program was developed by Knabe and approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors in 2001. The program allows someone to surrender an infant who is no more than 3 days old, as long as the infant shows no signs of abuse.
