Hemet police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 77-year-old man in what may have been a theft-related crime, authorities said.

Officers arriving at the scene in the 2800 block of Fruitvale Avenue on Saturday evening found the victim sprawled on the ground inside a garage, suffering from a single gunshot wound, said Hemet police Lt. Duane Wisehart.

Authorities rushed to the neighborhood after the Riverside County coroner’s office learned of the shooting about 8:15 p.m. Paramedics transported the victim to Hemet Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
