A knife-wielding man was shot and killed Friday night during a confrontation with deputies outside a home in Maywood, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s deputies from the East Los Angeles Station responded around 11:06 p.m. to a report of a man attempting to commit suicide at a home in the 3800 block of 56th Street, according to a department statement. The caller told authorities the man was holding a knife to his stomach, the statement said.

When deputies arrived they saw the man holding in his right hand a long metal object that resembled a knife, authorities said.

The man allegedly brandished the metal object at the deputies and threatened to use it to cause them physical harm.

“The deputies ordered the suspect to drop the object, but the suspect refused,” the sheriff’s statement said. “The suspect instead threw the object toward the deputies, narrowly missing their heads.”

The man grabbed a second long metal object, which appeared to be a knife, from the kitchen area and pointed it at the deputies, who then ordered the man numerous times to put the object down, according to the statement.

“The suspect instead began to advance toward the deputies, wielding the object in hand,” the statement said. “Fearing for their safety, the deputies shot the suspect.”

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured.

The names of the man and the deputies involved in the incident were not immediately released.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is underway.
