A 28-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department pleaded no contest this week to stealing money from what he believed to be an illegal drug operation.

Sgt. Bonnie Theodore Bryant III made the plea to one count of grand theft Wednesday and was sent to jail for one year, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department. He was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and ordered to give up $63,000 in “unsubstantiated wealth,” the department said.

Bryant, who was assigned to the narcotics bureau, was arrested on July 25, 2012, after an undercover sting operation revealed he stole the money, the Sheriff’s Department said.
