Knife-wielding man shot, wounded by police in South L.A.
A man wielding a knife in South L.A. was shot and wounded by a Los Angeles police officer early Saturday morning.
The shooting occurred just after midnight when police responded to a call about a mentally ill man in the 1400 block of West 29th Street.
When officers arrived, they were confronted by a man armed with a knife, said Lt. Scot Williams of the LAPD’s Southwest Division.
“The officer gave the suspect several commands to drop the knife,” Williams said. “He refused to comply, and one officer deployed a Taser device at the suspect. Another officer was involved in an officer-involved shooting. The suspect was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground.”
Williams said he did not know how many rounds were fired or where the man was struck. He said the man’s injuries were not life-threatening, but he could not elaborate further.
The man was taken into custody and taken to a hospital.
A knife was recovered at the scene near where the man fell, Williams said. No officers were injured, he said.
