Memorial planned at UC Berkeley for camp counselor killed near Yosemite

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at UC Berkeley for a camp counselor killed July 3 when an oak tree fell at Camp Tawonga near Yosemite National Park.

Buses will be provided for current staff to attend the service for Annais Rittenberg, and former staff will fill in their places temporarily at the camp, said camp director Jamie Simon.

The 160 staff members were offered the chance to quit or take time off following the accident, which injured four others, but none did, Simon said.

The third session’s campers arrived Sunday.

“I think there’s something beautiful about grieving as a community and honoring Annais’ memory by doing what she loved doing so much here,” Simon said.

Rittenberg, 21, had begun her second summer working at Camp Tawonga, said Simon, who hired her.

“We’re just so sorry for the loss of an amazing staff member,” Simon said. “She will be dearly missed.”

The memorial will be held at the Alumni House at UC Berkeley at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Simon said. A second service is being planned Saturday in San Francisco.
