Reader Photo: Slab City
Last May, photographer Holly Ellis took a trip to Slab City, an old World War II Navy base in southeastern California now inhabited by recreational vehicle owners and squatters.
Uncontrolled by the Bureau of Land Management, the campsite lives off the grid without electricity, running water or a proper sewage system -- among other municipal necessities.
Ellis took this shot with her Nikon 3000. The piece was probably assembled by community members known to make art from unwanted trash and recycled materials. “ I loved the way the TV framed the two broken chairs. For me, it said something about the breakdown of society and family structure,” she said.
