Los Angeles Police Department SWAT officers and the bomb squad have been called to South L.A., where a man opened fire Saturday morning on officers and then barricaded himself inside a house, police said.

At about 10:20 a.m., officers responded to a call of man with a gun near 57th and Main streets, said Officer Norma Eisenman.

The suspect, armed with a handgun, shot at the officers as they approached, according to Eisenman. One of the officers returned fire and the man retreated into a house on 57th Street, Eisenman said.

A team of SWAT officers, who handle calls of barricaded, armed suspects, was summoned to take control of the unfolding incident. Later, the bomb squad was requested as well. The reason for summoning the bomb squad was not immediately known, Eisenman said.
