Silver fire: Riverside County blaze is 100% contained
The Silver fire, which swept through more than 20,000 acres in Riverside County and destroyed homes and injured firefighters, is finally 100% contained.
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials said the blaze was 100% contained about 6 p.m. Monday. The current tally of destruction: 48 buildings destroyed, including 26 homes; at least 11 firefighters and one civilian injured; and a damage estimate of nearly $10 million.
The civilian, according to the Riverside County Fire Department, was found “seriously burned” on Wolfskill Truck Trail.
“The burn victim had been mountain biking on a rural road when he was overrun by the fast-moving wildfire,” according to a news release from the Fire Department.
The brush fire began Wednesday around Poppet Flats Road near Highway 243, south of Banning.
In its early stages, the fire spread quickly, consuming more than 1,000 acres an hour.
Earlier Monday, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department lifted all evacuation orders, although some roads remain closed.
