Newborn surrendered at L.A. fire station, third in county this year
A newborn boy was surrendered at a local fire station over the weekend, officials announced Tuesday, making him the third infant in 2014 to be left at a medical facility under the Los Angeles County’s Safe Surrender program.
The baby boy was surrendered on Saturday at an undisclosed fire station in Los Angeles, county Supervisor Don Knabe said in the statement.
It was the 116th safe surrender since the program was launched in 2001, Knabe said.
On Jan. 4, a baby girl became the first infant to be surrendered this year when she was dropped off at a Culver City hospital. On Jan. 22 another newborn girl was left at a Torrance hospital.
The Safe Surrender program was developed by Knabe and approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors in 2001. The program allows parents to surrender an infant who is no more than 3 days old, no questions asked, as long as the child shows no signs of abuse.
