A moment of solitude amid a storm

Share

During a stormy couple of days last August, Dallas McKinnon and his father were swimming in the ocean at Crystal Cove State Park. McKinnon said he remembers the waves being at least double their normal size due to the harsh weather conditions.

The two waited until the last minute -- right before each wave broke -- to dive underneath them. McKinnon took this photo as they resurfaced after one particularly large wave.

“It’s an addicting feeling being in the ocean,” the photographer said. “I wanted to capture the excitement and rush of it but I think in this photo I captured the brief moment of solitude you can experience as such a powerful force of nature rolls over your head.”
