Four people were killed Friday morning when two small planes collided in midair north of Phoenix, fire officials reported.

Phoenix firefighters arriving at the scene found one plane broken up and another fully engulfed in flames, Capt. Dave Wilson told The Los Angeles Times.

Two people were aboard each plane; paramedics pronounced all four dead at the scene.

Just after 10 a.m., witnesses saw the planes collide in midair and called for help. Both aircraft came down on New River Road near Interstate 17, about 15 miles north of downtown Phoenix.

“I’m getting reports that they are possibly student pilots,” Wilson said, though that has yet to be confirmed.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Wilson said.
