George Zimmerman’s wife, after lying for him, files for divorce

Share

After standing by her man, Shellie Zimmerman is striking out on her own: She has filed divorce from her husband, George Zimmerman, her attorney told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday.

The pair have had trouble staying out of the headlines following George Zimmerman’s July acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin. He’s since reportedly visited the factory that made the gun he used to shoot Martin and has been pulled over twice for speeding, most recently Tuesday in Lake Mary, Fla.

Last week, Shellie Zimmerman, 26, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor perjury for lying to a judge about the strength of the couple’s finances as the judge was setting bail for George Zimmerman.

“She was scared,” her attorney, Kelly Sims, told the Associated Press after Shellie Zimmerman made the guilty plea. “Her husband was locked up. She didn’t know what was going on. So she stood by her man, like Tammy Wynette says.”

Now, just a few days later, Sims has confirmed that her client has filed for divorce. (Sims didn’t comment further when The Times asked if Shellie Zimmerman had a statement about the divorce.)

After living through a widely publicized national trial and surviving a series of death threats while in hiding, Shellie Zimmerman told “Good Morning America” that the couple’s marriage had become strained.

Shellie Zimmerman was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and a year of probation.
