Letters: Romney goes overseas

Re “Romney trip takes another detour,” July 31

I, a registered Democrat for more than 40 years, felt a great sense of pride reading the comments Mitt Romney made in Jerusalem.

His statements on culture being responsible for the economic disparity between Israelis and Palestinians were correct. How technologically advanced were the Palestinians prior to 1967? History proves that education and human welfare have always been a priority for Jews.

My hat is off to Romney for having the courage to tell it like it is. I also give him credit for visiting only with the leaders of democracies. He may have earned my vote.

How odd it was for former Polish President Lech Walesa, perhaps the most famous labor leader living today, to endorse Romney, a man who vows to curb “union bosses” and fight for union-busting “right to work” laws, claims the National Labor Relations Board is packed with “union stooges,” disparages public service unions and even blames unions for job losses and business failures.

Thankfully, the current members and leadership of Poland’s Solidarity union have the good sense to disavow Walesa’s embrace of a man who opposes the very principles Walesa once fought so courageously for.

Re “Romney toughens his stance on Iran,” July 30

Romney’s inability to articulate an actual, coherent policy — domestic or foreign — while relying on pandering continues. In the case of Iran he states that his administration would exercise no independent judgment and simply support Israel if it attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Despite uncertainties over military feasibility, regional impacts (including Israel’s security), and security and economic impacts on the U.S., Romney’s policy would be to abdicate responsibility to a foreign country in return for millions in campaign money from casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and others.
